瓦努阿图移民政策相对宽松，创业的门槛较低。近三四十年间，中国积极发展同南太平洋岛国的友好合作关系，在经贸、文化、教育、卫生等领域的互利合作呈现出蓬勃发展的势头。因此，近年来移民瓦努阿图的华人迅速增多。

据可查的最新数据显示，瓦努阿图约有多华侨华人，其中人已成为永久居民，还有多新移民(来自香港的约人，来自中国内地的约人)。早期瓦努阿图的华侨华人大部分来自广东。近些年，一批华人移居瓦努阿图创业，加上支援本地医疗的中国医务人员，讲普通话的华侨华人越来越多，约占华侨华人总数的35%。年9月，瓦努阿图向富裕的中国人推出一项永居签证计划。这项永居签证计划规定，只要支付美元就可以获得在瓦努阿图永久居留签证。自该计划推出以来，已经逾千人获得永居签证。

历史上，瓦努阿图的华人华侨要么是契约劳工，要么是开餐馆、做零售或进出口贸易的商人。清朝末年，第一批华人移民抵境初期给当地的庄园主打工，后来通过自己的努力开始经营一些小生意。这些华人在国内的亲友随之投奔而来。瓦努阿图当地的华人随之增多。瓦努阿图的华侨华人主要集中在首都维拉港和北方最大岛屿桑托岛，多从事批发零售、餐馆和酒店业，维拉港约90%的零售店为华人经营，为瓦努阿图的经济繁荣特别是商品流通发挥了很大作用，已成为瓦努阿图重要的经济支柱。
